HDTV info
HDTV or High Definition Television is a high quality signal used
for TV transmissions. Both picture and sound are far superior to
the widely used NTSC system.
HDTV picture uses about twice the resolution used in a regular
transmission. In addition the picture ratio is 16:9 (cinema like)
as opposed to 4:3. These two main characteristics of High Definition
TV result in a much clearer picture and vivid colors.
The sound broadcasted via HDTV is Dolby 5.1 Surround as
opposed to Mono or Stereo sound used with standard NTSC broadcasts.
Equipment needed to watch HDTV programming
You can receive HD programming either using over-the-air signal
or via a cable/satellite HD subscription. The equipment necessary
is:
- HD TV set
- HD Tuner (built in with some TVs; usually provided by your cable/satellite
TV provider with an HD programming package)
- Rooftop HD antenna if you don't have an HD subscription and
want to watch High Definition programming broadcasted locally
Why aren't all channels broadcasted in High Definition?
The answer is simple: high costs. Broadcasting in High Definition
requires much higher costs. Eventually the transition to HDTV only
broadcasting will be made but this is a slow process that might
take many years from now.
